"When it comes to reds, the wards of Hemel-en-Aarde are Pinot Noir country, but Jakob's Vineyards in the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge is rapidly making a name for itself as a Cabernet Sauvignon producer.

The 2006 won the trophy for the best museum class Cab at this year's Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show while the 2011 was placed among the Top 100 SA Wines. Total plantings amount to 2ha, half Cab and the other half Cabernet Franc and Merlot, so this is nothing if not a boutique producer. Crystallum's Peter-Allan Finlayson consulting winemaker since 2010.

I revisited both wines recently and was again impressed.

Tasting notes and scores as follows:
Jakob's Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon 2006 - Red fruit, dried herbs, subtle forest floor and maritime notes. Medium bodied with really good fruit definition and fresh acidity. Layers of flavours and long, gently savoury finish. Bordeaux-like and rather fine.
Score: 93/100

Jakob's Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 - Dark fruit, fresh herbs and hint of earthiness. Rich and full but balanced thanks to bright acidity and careful extraction. Gently savoury finish. Quite particular - might one begin to speak of terroir?
Score 91/100"
